An IPTV subscription gives you the channels; the player app decides what it’s like to actually watch them. The same login can feel quick and tidy in one app and clunky in another. The guide layout, how fast you can flick between channels, whether your favourites stay saved, and how quickly you can find a film in the on-demand library all come down to the player.
Below we have compared the apps we see Irish viewers using most, what each does well, and where each falls short. None of these apps include any channels themselves. They’re players, and you add your own login details from your provider.
How We’d Judge a Player
When comparing apps, these are the things worth testing:
- Programme guide (EPG): Does it show several days ahead? Is it readable from the sofa?
- Channel switching speed: How long between pressing a button and seeing the picture?
- Login formats: Does it accept Xtream Codes, M3U links, or both?
- Organisation: Can you hide categories you never watch and build a favourites list?
- Platform support: Does it run on your Firestick, Smart TV or phone?
If you’re unsure which login format you’ve been given, our explainer on M3U vs Xtream Codes clears it up.
TiviMate
TiviMate has a loyal following, and it’s easy to see why. Its guide looks like a traditional cable TV grid, which makes it instantly familiar for anyone switching from Sky or Virgin Media. It handles big channel lists well and lets you reorder and hide groups so the channels you care about, say RTÉ, TG4 and the sports channels, sit at the top.
Strengths: excellent guide, fast switching, strong favourites management, catch-up support where the service provides it. The premium version adds recording and multi-playlist features.
Limitations: Android and Fire TV only, so it won’t run on Samsung, LG or Apple TV. The best features sit behind a small yearly or lifetime fee.
Best for: Firestick and Android TV box users who watch a lot of live TV.
IPTV Smarters Pro
IPTV Smarters Pro is probably the most widely recognised name, partly because it runs on so many platforms: Android, Fire TV, iOS and some Smart TVs. Its home screen splits content into Live TV, Movies and Series, which suits households that use on-demand content as much as live channels.
What it does well: very beginner-friendly, works across lots of devices, simple Xtream Codes login, built-in sections for films and box sets.
Where it falls short: the live guide is less polished than TiviMate’s, and very long channel lists can feel slower to navigate.
Suits: first-time users, families who use a mix of devices, and anyone who watches plenty of on-demand content.
IBO Player and Similar Smart TV Apps
On Samsung (Tizen) and LG (webOS) TVs, the app choice is more limited. IBO Player and a handful of similar players fill that gap. They’re typically activated by entering your TV’s device ID on the app developer’s website and then adding your playlist there.
Upsides: no extra box needed, works directly on the TV.
Downsides: there’s usually a one-off activation fee per TV after a trial period, and performance depends on how powerful the TV is.
Ideal for: people who want to stream straight from a newer Smart TV. See our Samsung and LG guide for set-up tips.
Apple TV and iPhone Options
Apple users have players such as iPlayTV, GSE Smart IPTV and Smarters-style clients in the App Store. They’re stable and clean, though most lack some of the advanced guide customisation available on Android.
VLC as a Fallback
VLC media player can open an M3U playlist on almost any computer or phone. It isn’t designed for living-room TV viewing and has no proper guide, but it’s useful for quickly checking whether a playlist works when troubleshooting.
Quick Comparison
| App | Platforms | Standout feature | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| TiviMate | Android, Fire TV | Cable-style guide | Free tier, paid premium |
| IPTV Smarters Pro | Android, Fire TV, iOS, some TVs | Easy all-rounder | Free on most platforms |
| IBO Player | Samsung, LG, others | Runs natively on Smart TVs | Trial, then one-off fee |
| VLC | Almost everything | Quick playlist test | Free |
Our Practical Advice
Pick your device first, then choose the app that suits it. On a Firestick or Android box, try TiviMate for live TV and keep IPTV Smarters Pro installed for films and series. On a Smart TV, go with a well-reviewed native player. Whatever you choose, spend ten minutes hiding the channel groups you’ll never use. It makes every evening easier.
